| color balance rgb (instance “film”) | Moderate warmth, less than the Kodak Gold style; saturation raised to follow “high color saturation” | Midtones 50° / 0.005, highlights 55° / 0.014, shadows 175° / 0.006; saturation +8 %, vibrance +0.06 |
| color equalizer | Reds and yellows marked, skin not pushed, blues discreet | Saturation: red ×1.12, yellow ×1.10, orange ×0.98, blue ×0.90 |
| tone curve (RGB, per channel) | Medium contrast with a soft shoulder | Nodes (0, 0.02) (0.10, 0.07) (0.25, 0.215) (0.5, 0.505) (0.75, 0.80) (0.88, 0.905) (1, 0.96) |

Measurements
The measurements come from a few test photos of our own, which are not published on this site. The photos shown here are different.
| Photo | Zone | Baseline | Metric | Before | After | Film expectation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1014 | whole image | Base rendering | Lsd (contrast) | 30.7 | 32.7 | Medium contrast: moderate increase |
| 0775 | whole image | Base rendering | Lsd (contrast) | 14.3 | 17.0 | Medium contrast: moderate increase |
| 0775 | sky | Base rendering | C (chroma) | 27.5 | 26.2 | Discreet blues: slightly less saturated |
| 0775 | sea | Base rendering | C (chroma) | 22.2 | 20.2 | Discreet blues: slightly less saturated |
| 0989 | skin | Base rendering | C (chroma) | 16.4 | 21.9 | Skin more orange but more neutral than the Kodak Gold style (C 25.7) |
| 0989 | skin | Base rendering | h (hue, °) | 44.2 | 51.6 | Warm skin, less than the Kodak Gold style (h 56.7°) |
| 1014 | pink T-shirt | Base rendering | C (chroma) | 33.7 | 43.0 | Marked reds and pinks |
| 1014 | pink T-shirt | Base rendering | h (hue, °) | 358.8 | 8.2 | Little hue rotation (about +9°) |
Base rendering: darktable’s default processing of the RAW file, without the preset. Luminance conversion (black and white): the same photo converted with plain luminance weights, to isolate the effect of the film’s spectral sensitivity.
What the style changes
The style sets five darktable modules. It aims at a warm, fairly saturated ISO 100 negative with a moderate contrast, as reviews describe on the Kodak Pro Image 100 film page. It is built from reviews and from the text of Kodak’s 1997 datasheet only: no characteristic curve or official grain figure was available. Figures below come from renders at 1000 px, without any reference to third-party style packs.
- Medium contrast, soft shoulder. The per-channel tone curve raises contrast moderately: Lsd goes from 30.7 to 32.7 on photo 1014 and from 14.3 to 17.0 on photo 0775.
- Warm, saturated color. A color balance rgb instance named “film” adds a moderate warm tint and raises saturation by 8 %, in line with the datasheet’s “high color saturation”. The color equalizer marks reds and yellows (×1.12 and ×1.10) and holds orange back (×0.98) so skin is not pushed.
- Discreet blues. rgb primaries lowers blue purity to 0.94 and the color equalizer reduces blue saturation (×0.90). Sky chroma goes from 27.5 to 26.2 and sea chroma from 22.2 to 20.2. This follows Emulsive’s view that blues appear weakly; it contradicts Casual Photophile, who calls them outstanding.
- Skin more neutral than Gold. Skin hue goes from 44.2° to 51.6° and chroma from 16.4 to 21.9. The Kodak Gold style, measured the same way, gives 56.7° and 25.7.
- Reds and pinks stronger. The pink T-shirt goes from chroma 33.7 to 43.0 (+28 %), with a hue change of about 9° (358.8° to 8.2°).
- Fine grain sized from a Print Grain Index of 43, a figure from one review that the datasheet text does not confirm.
What it leaves alone
- Your base development. The style contains no exposure, no sigmoid or filmic, no white balance and no LUT.
- Your color balance rgb. The style’s instance is named “film” and is added next to yours.
- But not every other module. Applied from the lighttable or the darkroom, a style module replaces the instance of the same name if the photo has one. The tone curve, rgb primaries, color equalizer and grain carry no instance name, so they replace settings you already made in those modules. Your earlier settings stay in the history.
- Your pipeline order. The style file carries no module order.
Limits
- No official datasheet used. Only the text of datasheet E-4L was found, without curves or grain data. The tone curve and grain rely on reviews, and the Print Grain Index of 43 comes from a single review.
- Reviews contradict each other on contrast and on blues. The choice is an interpretation.
- Kodacolor 100 is not covered. Whether it is the same film as Pro Image 100 is disputed.
- The green cast under artificial light that one review reports is not simulated.
- Not tuned on scans or film measurements. The style is a rendering, not a scan of the film.
Tips
- Apply it early. If you plan to adjust the tone curve, rgb primaries, color equalizer or grain, apply the style first.
- Everything stays editable. Each module is an ordinary instance: turn the grain down or the “film” color balance off afterwards.
- Blues too muted for you? Raise blue saturation in the color equalizer or blue purity in rgb primaries.
- Installation: see Install and apply darktable styles.
