Measurements

The measurements come from a few test photos of our own, which are not published on this site. The photos shown here are different.

Before and after the preset, measured in CIELab: L lightness, C chroma, h hue angle
PhotoZoneBaselineMetric BeforeAfterFilm expectation
0775 whole image Base rendering Lsd (contrast) 14.3 15.7 Medium contrast, a little under the Superia 200 style (16.2)
0775 whole image Base rendering L5 (blacks) 29.4 28.2 Blacks almost unchanged
0775 whole image Base rendering L95 (whites) 75.2 78.4 Whites opened, no shoulder
0775 sky Base rendering C (chroma) 27.5 33.3 Green-blue cast: sky more saturated
0775 sky Base rendering h (hue, °) 273.6 263.6 Green-blue cast: hue turned toward cyan
0775 sea Base rendering C (chroma) 22.2 27.4 Green-blue cast: more saturated
0775 sea Base rendering h (hue, °) 270.1 253.8 Green-blue cast: hue turned toward cyan
0989 skin Base rendering C (chroma) 16.4 15.2 Natural skin: not pushed toward pink
0989 skin Base rendering h (hue, °) 44.2 44.1 Natural skin: hue unchanged
1014 pink T-shirt Base rendering C (chroma) 33.7 35.9 Firm reds, pink not dominant
1014 whole image Base rendering Lsd (contrast) 30.7 32.4 Medium contrast

Base rendering: darktable’s default processing of the RAW file, without the preset. Luminance conversion (black and white): the same photo converted with plain luminance weights, to isolate the effect of the film’s spectral sensitivity.

What the style changes

The style sets five darktable modules. It aims at a cool green-blue Fujicolor C200: medium contrast, firm greens and reds, natural skin and visible grain, as the datasheet and most reviews describe on the Fujifilm Fujicolor C200 film page. All figures below come from renders made with darktable-cli 5.6.0 at 1000 px, measured in CIELab. The Superia 200 column in our notes refers to the Fujifilm Superia 200 style of this collection, used for comparison.

  • A cool cast across the range. A color balance rgb instance named “film” adds a green-blue tint to the shadows, midtones and highlights, with no pink and no magenta midtones. Sky hue moves from 273.6° to 263.6° and sea hue from 270.1° to 253.8°, a stronger turn toward cyan than the Superia 200 style. Sky chroma rises from 27.5 to 33.3 and sea chroma from 22.2 to 27.4.
  • Firm greens and reds. rgb primaries and color zones raise green and red saturation and turn greens a little toward cyan. Pink T-shirt chroma goes from 33.7 to 35.9, a smaller push than the Superia 200 style.
  • A medium tone curve. The curve has a short toe and no shoulder, as on the datasheet. Contrast rises moderately (Lsd 14.3 → 15.7 on photo 0775, 30.7 → 32.4 on photo 1014). Blacks hardly move (L5 29.4 → 28.2 on 0775) and whites open (L95 75.2 → 78.4).
  • Visible grain, sized from Fujifilm’s RMS granularity of 4 and set stronger than the Superia 200 style, because the reviews describe distinct grain, mostly in the shadows.

What it leaves alone

  • Your base development. The style contains no exposure, no sigmoid or filmic, no white balance and no LUT. Those settings stay as you made them.
  • Your color balance rgb. The style’s color balance rgb is a separate instance named “film”: it is added next to yours, which stays untouched.
  • But not your rgb primaries, color zones, tone curve or grain. When you apply a style from the lighttable or the darkroom, each of its modules replaces the instance of the same module with the same name, if the photo has one, and is added otherwise. Those four modules carry no instance name in this style, so they replace any settings you had already made in them. Your earlier settings remain in the history.
  • Your pipeline order. The style file carries no module order list, so it does not impose one on your image.

Exporting with a style, or rendering with darktable-cli, works differently: every module of the style is added as a separate instance. Our measurements were made that way, on darktable’s default rendering. The details are in Install and apply darktable styles.

Limits

  • An interpretation, not a calibration. The style is built from Fujifilm’s datasheet and a handful of reviews of different rolls and production runs. No film was scanned or measured to tune it.
  • The reviews disagree on the cast. One reviewer saw a pink or magenta cast in highlights and overexposed frames and no green in the shadows; the others lean green-blue. The style follows the majority. This is a judgment call, not a certainty.
  • Approximate curve. The characteristic curve was read from a graph, so the slope and the absence of a shoulder are approximate. The datasheet gives no numeric contrast value.
  • Greens and grain not measured. Our four test photos have little vegetation, so the green rendering was not checked on a foliage photo or a chart. Grain was judged by eye on the renders, not measured.
  • Exposure behavior. Muddy underexposure and pink skin in overexposure are not simulated.

Tips

  • Apply it early. If you plan to fine-tune the rgb primaries, color zones, tone curve or grain yourself, apply the style first: it would replace those settings if you made them before.
  • Everything stays editable. Each module the style sets is an ordinary instance: lower the grain strength or the “film” color balance rgb if the cast is too cool for your scene.
  • Warmer variant. If you prefer the pink-highlight rendering one reviewer described, reduce the highlight tint in the “film” instance yourself. The style does not offer it.
  • Installation: see Install and apply darktable styles.
